Summary:

  • Conservatives’ assertions that Paul Pelosi had previously known the suspect, David DePape, 42, and that there had been no break-in at her San Francisco home have been refuted by police reports about the incident.

  • DePape allegedly told the officers that he had used a hammer to smash through the glass door and surprised Pelosi’s husband.

  • DePape entered the speaker’s house while she wasn’t there.

  • Trump is hardly the only conservative who has attempted to cast doubt on or make fun of the notion that Speaker Pelosi was DePape’s aim.

  • Donald Trump Jr., his son, uploaded a picture of a hammer and some men’s underwear online.

There’s a lot of awful stuff going on, and while I don’t like Nancy Pelosi, what’s happening there is extremely sad, said Trump. “If there’s even a hint of truth to what’s being said, the whole thing is ridiculous. It was weird because the police were waiting there nearly from the moment the window was broken in. You must thus explain that to your audience, which includes me.

Conservatives’ assertions that Paul Pelosi had previously known the suspect, David DePape, 42, and that there had been no break-in at her San Francisco home have been refuted by police reports about the incident.

According to the FBI’s charging documents, the officers who responded to the scene “secured a roll of tape, white rope, a second hammer, a pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and zip ties” and “observed a broken glass door to the back porch.” DePape allegedly told the officers that he had used a hammer to smash through the glass door and surprised Pelosi’s husband. Speaker Pelosi would be carried into Congress with fractured kneecaps, according to DePape, “which would demonstrate to other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions,” he claimed.

DePape entered the speaker’s house while she wasn’t there.

Trump is hardly the only conservative who has attempted to cast doubt on or make fun of the notion that Speaker Pelosi was DePape’s aim. Donald Trump Jr., his son, uploaded a picture of a hammer and some men’s underwear online. Billionaire Elon Musk also shared a tweet about the attack that has since been removed, in which he claimed, “there is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye.” Dinesh D’Souza, the conservative provocateur and director of the widely panned documentary on the 2020 election “2000 Mules,” has repeatedly questioned the facts of the case on Twitter and said he believed, without evidence, that the suspect was a “sex partner or male prostitute.”
