Summary:
-
Youssef Amrani, the ambassador of Morocco to South Africa, stated on January 30th, 2023, in Pretoria that his country views the existence of WMD as a never-ending menace with catastrophic hazards that affects the future of the globe and future generations.
-
Speaking at the beginning of an African regional seminar on the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (CTBT), Ambassador Amrani stated that “the Kingdom is firmly committed to the total elimination of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction as a state party to almost all international conventions on disarmament, including the Pelindaba Treaty for an African nuclear-weapon-free zone.
-
“He asserted this during the two-day meeting, which was opened by the South African Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alvin Botes, in front of more than 80 attendees.
-
He adds that from this vantage point, the Kingdom continues to believe that nuclear and WMDs do not effectively maintain regional and global peace and security.
-
He shared the international community’s concerns regarding the development of nuclear weapons and their proliferation.
He said this at the start of the two-day meeting, which was opened by Alvin Botes, the South African Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, in front of more than 80 people. With the return of the nuclear threat and the irreversible effects of using them, getting rid of weapons of mass destruction is a challenge that needs serious, practical, and cooperative steps.
The ambassador said that the Kingdom of Morocco, as a supporter and provider of international peace and security, is sure that the best way to achieve world peace and stability is through peaceful coexistence and honest, constructive discussion based on respect for each other.
He also says that from this point of view, the Kingdom still thinks nuclear and WMD weapons are not an excellent way to keep peace and security in the region and worldwide.
He said that Morocco “reaffirms its unwavering support for multilateral initiatives to fight the arms race, promote the strengthening of disarmament agreements to limit weapons of mass destruction, and support the efforts of the international community to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and get rid of weapons of mass destruction.”
Ambassador Amrani said the Kingdom had also reaffirmed its commitment to total, irreversible disarmament. He also said that international cooperation and multilateralism were needed to find real ways to deal with the dangers of WMD proliferation.
Ambassador Amrani says the best way to keep peace and security worldwide is to create good conditions through political, economic, and sociocultural development. He was just as worried as the rest of the world about what would happen if nuclear weapons spread.
