The New Museum in New York City has chosen two curators to lead the upcoming iteration of its closely watched triennial, choosing both internally and, for the first time, internationally: curators Vivian Crockett of the New Museum and Isabella Rjeille of the Museu de Arte de So Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP). Being the first instalment of the ongoing exhibition following the completion of the institution’s $89 million Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas-designed expansion, they will benefit from more space than their forerunners. The sixth iteration of the museum’s Triennial will debut in 2026, five years after the last event.
Massimiliano Gioni, the artistic director of the New Museum and co-curator of its inaugural Triennial, said that Isabella is the first international curator to participate in the Triennial and brings a wealth of experience from MASP, one of the most exciting institutions for modern and contemporary art. Vivian is a member of a new generation of curators who are influencing the conversation about art and culture in general. She recently co-curated the New Museum’s critically praised Wangechi Mutu survey.
After working at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and SFMOMA, Crockett joined the New Museum in 2022. Reilly previously worked at the Fundaço Bienal de So Paulo, where she assisted in curating the 2016 Bienal de So Paulo. Since 2016, she has held different curatorial jobs at MASP.
The Whitney Biennial and MoMA PS1’s quinquennial Greater New York exhibitions are the two most keenly followed recurrent exhibitions at New York museums. The New Museum Triennial debuted in 2009, a year after the organization moved into its new facility on the Bowery.
Gioni, Laura Hoptman, and Lauren Cornell collaborated on the Triennial’s initial edition, provocatively named Younger Than Jesus, featuring only works by artists under 33. Eungie Joo, who at the time served as the museum’s director and curator of educational and public programs and is currently the contemporary art curator at SFMOMA, was responsible for curating the 2012 edition, The Ungovernables. With the artist Ryan Trecartin, Cornell returned to co-curate the third Triennial, Surround Audience. Gary Carrion-Murayari, a curator at the New Museum, and Alex Gartenfeld, a curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, collaborated on the 2018 edition Songs for Sabotage. The sixth Triennial, titled Soft Water Hard Stone, was co-curated by Jamillah James of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Margot Norton, curator of the New Museum.
Originally scheduled to debut in 2022, the New Museum’s upcoming extension will rise next to its Sanaa-designed structure in the Bowery.
