As we celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week from November 14–18, 2022, the Western Cape government promises to help our entrepreneurs, who are the backbone of our economy.
The best way to take advantage of the huge potential in our province, including in our townships and informal sector, is to make it easy for SMMEs to succeed by cutting down on paperwork and laying the groundwork for growth.
For this reason, the Western Cape government conducts several programs that support entrepreneurs, such as:
- Red Tape Reduction Unit – Our committed Red Tape Reduction Unit works with companies in all industries, within our government, and with other levels of government to remove barriers that arise. It maintained a successful case resolution rate of 93% for the most recent fiscal year.
- The Western Cape’s 730 SMMEs have received support from the SMME Booster Fund, which has provided R59 million in funding since its inception in 2019.
- The Century City-based Procurement Client Center, which Provincial Treasury runs, offers various services to make business with the government more accessible. These services include providing procurement support assistance to provincial departments, entities, municipalities, and suppliers through an integrated helpdesk. The Procurement Client Center supported more than 3 500 walk-in clients during the 2021–2022 fiscal year and enabled 5 747 suppliers to register on the Western Cape Supplier Database.
- Paying invoices on time – The Western Cape Government is working hard to ensure that services are paid for on time because we understand that businesses need a predictable cash flow to run, remain open, and expand. Many of our suppliers are Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs), so this effort is part of our commitment to support SMMEs. The Western Cape Government paid 99% of all invoices for goods and services during the fiscal year 2021–2022, and at the end of the following year, 2021–2022, there were no outstanding invoices older than 30 days.
We are making a lot of effort to increase energy resilience in the Western Cape through our Municipal Energy Resilience (MER) initiative because recurring blackouts limit SMMEs’ capacity to open, trade, and grow. For this reason, Premier Winde recently announced the formation of a cabinet-level task team to examine what can be done in conjunction with businesses, local government, and civil society to increase energy resilience and protect the economy, jobs, and well-being of our citizens. For entrepreneurs in the Western Cape to be successful, they need a reliable and cheap energy supply.
This week, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) will hold two webinars to give business owners important information that will help them succeed, such as details on incentives and different ways to get help with their businesses.
Sign up for the first webinar, which will take place on November 14, 2022, and talk about small businesses’ tax obligations and benefits.
On November 17, 2022, a second webinar will be held to talk about the funding options for entrepreneurs and to make the criteria for funding and business help easier to understand.
During this Global Entrepreneurship Week, we will continue to recognize the forces that drive our economy and work to give them the help they need to achieve the rapid economic growth that creates jobs.
