The project aims to save women, their babies, and kids under the age of five in the Khatlon region’s four districts, which have a population of close to 5 million people. The project’s components are as follows: i) provision of tools, medical supplies, and infrastructure development for health institutions; ii) building institutional and human resource capacity through associated research and training; and iii) community mobilisation and support for awareness campaigns.
The project aims to reduce maternal death from 45 to 25 per 100,000 live births (LB), newborn mortality from 34 to 20 per 1,000 LB, and neonatal mortality from 19 to 16 per 1,000 LB by 2030.
The funders’ officials, including ISFD, visited the Danghara and Norak districts in the Khatlon region on September 5 to observe project execution. The tour focused on equipment and training for rural health centres and households, as well as the Danghara polyclinic and the Norak Central District Hospital’s building and refurbishment sites.
In these densely populated yet geographically challenging regions, the ISFD and other sponsors also connected with the local community and solicited feedback about the services offered under the initiative.
“Despite still being in the implementation phase, the LLF project in Tajikistan has made remarkable progress towards improving maternity conditions and lowering child mortality and morbidity rates in the Khatlon Region,” said Dr Hiba Ahmed, Director General of the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD). In particular, Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)—”ensuring healthy lives and fostering well-being for all at all ages”—is realised with the help of the initiative, which supports the nation’s efforts to build an effective health sector. ISFD hopes that the project will be fully executed and positively and significantly influence the lives of beneficiaries, particularly those in rural and difficult-to-reach communities.
Dr Hiba Ahmed also thanked the Government of Tajikistan, the various parties involved, and the ministries for supporting this important project, particularly the Ministries of Finance, Health, and Economic Development & Trade. This tour was highly successful thanks to the nation’s hospitality.
