Months of fear for Ukraine
The High Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine stated that the six months following the Russian invasion had been “unimaginably scary” for the Ukrainian people.
According to Ms. Bachelet, millions more people have been forced to leave the nation, and millions more have been internally displaced. She also pointed out that roughly 1,000 of the 5,587 documented civilian deaths were minors.
The UN rights chief insisted that “both parties” should respect international human rights law and international humanitarian law “at all times and in all circumstances” amid growing concerns about the Zaporizhian nuclear plant complex and allegations from Ukrainian and Russian forces that each has been shelling it.
An increase in violence in Myanmar
Five years after more than 700,000 ethnic Rohingya fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar to avoid a military onslaught, Ms. Bachelet argued that the “catastrophe” of Myanmar’s human rights had only worsened.
After overthrowing the government of Myanmar 18 months ago, the High Commissioner claimed that Tatmadaw soldiers had continued and even intensified operations against people in residential areas in the southeast, northwest, and central regions.
Today, more than 14 million people in Myanmar require humanitarian help, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) continues to regularly record grave violations of international humanitarian law and human rights, according to Ms. Bachelet.
The High Commissioner said this includes “repression against protestors and attacks against civilians that may amount to crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
No “vacuum” in the leadership
Ms. Bachelet emphasized that there would be “no leadership vacuum” even though her term as the UN’s rights chief expires on August 31 and that her replacement has not yet been announced.
She informed journalists that there were about 50 people interested in the position and added that every effort was being made to name a new High Commissioner as quickly as possible.
