WATCH: Men, dogs saved in dramatic police rescue

The hero cops were at the scene of a crash on the Cunningham Hwy on Thursday afternoon when they were alerted to an emergency unfolding several hundred metres away.Dramatic footage of the rescue shows one of the officers shouting “just stay there” as he wades through water towards the van, which had become wedged against a tree.The van can be seen half-submerged, with a man clinging to the passenger side door.An elderly man is sitting in the driver’s seat, with water pooled around his waist.‘We’re going to do this quick because the water’s coming up,” an officer tells the men.One police officer can be seen helping a man, who is holding a puppy, through the water, while another waited with the elderly man until he returned.The first officer returned and carried the man on his back to safety while another coaxed the trapped dogs from the back of the van and helped them to higher ground.“You’re all good, I’ll get the dogs,” the officer can be heard reassuring the man.At the back of the van, with fast-flowing water moving around him, the officer convinced the dogs – a Great Dane and a Kelpie – to enter the water.“Come on pup,” he can be heard calling to them.“The Queensland Police Service has commended the actions of quick-thinking officers involved in the dramatic rescue of two men and their dogs from a vehicle swept away by flood waters at Morwincha yesterday,” a statement released by police said.“Thanks to the brave actions of the four officers from Ipswich District, no one was seriously injured.”“One of the Senior Constables is currently caring for the dogs, Ghost, Molly and the puppy (still to be named), until conditions ease in the Scenic Rim.“Police continue to urge members of the public to avoid roads, creeks and bridges likely to be impacted by rapidly rising water, storm debris and flood damage during the current wet weather.”Download the Courier Mail app
