Satellite Imagery Captures Flames, Smoke From New Mexico Wildfires

Satellite imagery captured flames and smoke plumes from the combined wildfires burning in New Mexico on Monday, May 9. The satellite footage was released by Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, or CIRA. The Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fires, which started in April, were estimated to have scorched 203,920 acres (about 319 square miles) by May 10 and were 39 percent contained, according to fire officials.
