Protesters Stage ‘Black Friday’ Demonstration in Manila Against Election Results

Protesters gathered in Manila on May 13 for a “Black Friday” protest against the results of the Philippines’ May 9 presidential election. The Manila Bulletin said thousands turned out. The Commission on Elections, or COMELEC, has rejected all claims of election fraud, the Bulletin said. Footage posted to Twitter shows demonstrators near the Philippines International Convention Center, where COMELEC was canvassing votes in senatorial and party list elections. According to the Manila Bulletin, protesters were blocked by police from reaching the building. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, was set to take office as president, while Sara Duterte, daughter of outgoing president Rodrigo Duterte, was set to be the country’s next vice president.
